The participation of Indigenous Peoples has been strengthened since 2001 through the Indigenous Leaders Summit of the Americas, which have developed alongside the conclusion of Summits of the Americas (Quebec, 2001, Mar del Plata, 2005, and Port of Spain, 2009).
Summit participants are, in general, leaders of various indigenous peoples of the region, representatives of indigenous women, youth leaders and elders, who have been selected to participate in these meetings in coordination with the Summit Planning Committee, composed of representatives from North America, South America, the Caribbean, led by the Assembly of First Nations (AFN, for its acronym in English) and the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC, in English).
This space within the Indigenous Peoples Group of the SVC is intended to facilitate follow-up and coordination of this important initiative.
