Sustainable development is an issue that features in the Summits agenda since the beginning of the Summits Process. In fact, an important initiative from the Miami Summit (1994) was the inclusion of a proposal from the President of Bolivia, Gonzálo Sánchez de Lozada, to call a specialized Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia in 1996.
The objectives of the Special Summit were to establish a common vision for the future according to the concepts of sustainable development. This Summit resulted in 140 mandates focusing on Health and Education; Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry; Sustainable Cities and Communities; Water Resources and Coastal Areas; and Energy and Minerals.
The general consensus on the concept of including economic, social and environmental elements within an understanding of sustainable development was perhaps the most important achievement of the Bolivian Summit. Consensus was also reached on other issues such as a financial resources, technology transfers, division of responsibilities, cooperation and Biodiversity among others.
The Department of Sustainable Development (DSD) supports OAS member States in the design and implementation of policies, programs and projects oriented to integrate environmental priorities with poverty alleviation, and socio-economic development goals. Translating sustainable development and environmental protection goals into concrete actions, DSD supports the execution of multiple-country projects in such diverse areas as integrated water management, renewable energy, natural Hazards-climate change adaptation and land use planning, biological diversity and environmental law and policy. The Department also supports transparency and Public Participation, as practical ingredients of good governance.
This virtual group has been created to provide a space for consultation and communication among the various stakeholders interested in debating issues related to sustainable development. Additional information about this topic is available through the website of DSD and the Summit Follow Up System (SISCA).
